Moffly Media’s athome magazine A-List Awards 2019

I’m delighted to share that our office has won the 2019 A-List Award, for Renovation.

This “townhome” townhouse in Greenwich began life, back at the turn of the twentieth century, as a modest in-town cottage on a small lot, close to the street, with no garage…

But by 2017, after spending parts of its life as a rooming-house, later a triplex, the house had acquired an unfortunate addition in the back, plastic siding, vinyl windows, and a rabbit-warren of little rooms, narrow stairs, and narrow hallways…

Our renovation—really a complete whole-house rebuild—takes the original vernacular of hipped dormers, angled bays, and gracious porch; and extends the architecture back from the original, submerging the previous addition.

A rich palette of cedar shingles on the roof, black framed windows, cedar clapboard siding, Ipe porch decking, and half-round gutters creates an elegant “new suit of clothes” for this townhome.

At the rear, a shared driveway provided access to the lower level addition, which—when our owners came on board—housed a basement apartment.  We replaced this with a two-car garage, which functions as a base for an outdoor terrace off the kitchen and gathering areas above.

This outdoor terrace / gathering area—accessed by 16-foot wide gliding doors—is topped-off with an arbor/trellis, creating an “outdoor room” while also screening-off some of the nearby neighboring homes.

Moving indoors from this private terrace, the kitchen / dining area begins the transition to contemporary interiors, with minimalist details executed in luxurious materials.

The interior spaces flow naturally, bringing in light from generous windows, towards the street-side the house, incorporating the owner’s lovely modern art-work and furniture.

Upstairs, this transitional / contemporary theme is continued: an example is the master bath, where—behind one of the original window bays—plantations shutters, stone tile and bespoke cabinetry are woven together with care.
